HOT Reads Edition of Fan Girl Friday

Happy “Good Lord It’s Hot” Friday!

Or at least it’s hot in my neck of the woods. Kids are gearing up for back to school, the pool is too hot for a dip (temp of bathwater? No thanks) and fall isn’t even flirting with me yet.

BUT, good news – we have some hot reads you can nab. Then put your feet up, grabbed that chilled wine spritzer (or just a cold Sprite) and lose yourself in a whole new world. Yay!

I’ve always liked Susan Wiggs and I put this one on my TBR stack mostly because of the cover and title. Family Tree is her new rerelease and the perfect one for someone looking for a sweet, emotional journey. It’s the story of woman living a charmed life who finds herself losing everything. She must journey back home to the family who raised her. There’s an old cookbook, a former love and lots of healing. And the cover suggest fall. Come on, fall! The price point is prohibitive at $12.99 but it might be the perfect one to put on your “want” shelf.

Love the best friend to lovers trope? How about The Best Friend Bargain by Robin Bielman? Olivia Lincoln has a plan guaranteed to get her life back on track. A plan that involves her best friend, Danny. And he’s on board, too…until she blurts ostacking the deckut that they’re engaged and expecting a baby, and the news spreads like wildfire. Sound up your alley (uh, that’s up everyone’s alley), you can check it out at

And fun news from Marina Adair – her book Autumn in the Vineyard has been picked up for development at the Hallmark Channel! Such fun and fabulous news and if you want to read the book before you watch the movie, you can find it here:

Congrats, Marina! The Rubies are excited for you!

The Rubies got lots of books on sale. Check these out:

Ruby sister Lindsey Brookes has HERO OF HER HEART. In this one Ruby’s back in town and her mama is up to her matchmaking ways. Poor ol’ not interested Tanner doesn’t stand a chance. It has a 4.1 out of 5 stars on 154 Amazon reviews

And Heather McCollum has a book on sale, too!

On SALE for $0.99 – SIREN’S SONG: Book One of the Guardians Series – 2015 WINNER of the Readers’ Crown!

Jule Welsh can sing. She enthralls people with her bel canto voice. But it takes more than practice to reach her level of exquisite song; it takes siren’s blood running through her veins. Jule is starting her senior year at Cougar Creek High when her relatively normal world begins to resemble a roller coaster flying through a carnival scare house. Her mother is diagnosed as insane and committed, a psycho-stalker is snapping pictures of her to put into his homemade Jule-shrine, her voice is suddenly putting people into comatose trances, oh and the gorgeous new guy in town, Luke Whitmore, is interested in her . . . but also wants to kill her.   Find it at

So what if you’re looking for something to get your blood pumping….no, not that…a good suspense. Ruby Anne Marie Becker has Stacking the Deck on sale! Here’s the tag line for the series – In a city built for sin, the Redemption Club is a secret society that exists to fulfill a person’s darkest desires—including murder games—for a price. This book has a sexy bodyguard, a bold off-grid heroine and a missing girl.  Check it out at the Amazon Buy Link

And finally, TODAY is the last day to nab Diane Layne’s Trust No One for FREE and her 99 cent books (The Good Daughter and Edge of Trust) are on sale until the 14th. Find Trust No One here

Ruby Rita Henuber has been dipping into her TBR stack and came out with a sexy fantasy. So if you’re looking for something to light your fires, here you go:

Before She Wakes: Forbidden Fairy Tales
by Sharon Lynn Fisher

Ruby sister and Rita finalist Sharon Lynn Fisher blends dark erotic romance, fantasy, and science fiction in these bold tales of seduction and sensual awakening. These are bedtime stories for adults.

Double RITA finalist and Bachelor-addicted Lizzie Shane has a recommendation for us:

It’s a new release by my good friend Kaye Chambers, who had to take a hiatus from writing but she’s back and just released the second book in her San Fran-based urban fantasy series.  DEFYING DESTINY ( is the sequel to BLOOD & DESTINY ( and I would recommend reading both because it’s one of those series where the characters build on you and the emotional payoff in the final third of the second book is heart-wrenchingly satisfying.  I hope other readers love getting wrapped up in Destiny & Marcus’s world as much as I did.  🙂

And finally I have a recommendation for you history lovers out there. Last week I picked up Daniel Silva’s The Unlikely Spy.  Set in the midst of WWII, it chronicles the cat and mouse games played by both the German and British spies. This particular book revolves around the intelligence surrounding the D Day invasion and was full of masterful twists and turns. It’s long, it’s complicated and it’s perfect for those who love spies, betrayal and a bad ass woman with a stiletto (she scared me!) I bought this one because it was the cheapest and I wanted to try him. It’s $4.99 and worth every penny. He has a new one out now…but it’s not $4.99 🙂

So there you have it – some great books to check out for every reader’s taste. Now it’s your turn. Share with us what’s been tickling your fancy….or making you sleep with the lights on!

Ruby Release: Jimmie Joe Johnson: Manwhore by Lindsey Brookes

Lindsey BrookesToday I am thrilled to host our very own Ruby Lindsey Brookes as we talk about her irrepressible hound dog hero, Jimmie Joe Johnson: Manwhore, and the woman who finally tames this rascal. As you might have guessed from the title, this is not your everyday romance novel. Jimmie Joe is fresh, fun, irreverent, and full of heart… as told in Lindsey’s unique, brash “Hick Lit” voice.

From witches to Elvis impersonators, you never know what’s going to come at you next in this romp of a book.

And now, without further ado, here’s Jimmie Joe…

Jimmie Joe Cover “There are some things a man can’t change. My bein’ a babe magnet for one…” –Jimmie Joe Johnson

Fact is, just about every single female in Possum Hollow, Alabama–along with most of the attached ones–has enjoyed my services. And not just as an auto mechanic, if you know what I mean. With me, women know exactly what to expect. A sweet ride, and no promises.

But even a manwhore has rules. Like stayin’ away from Baylee Jean Brown. As teenagers, Baylee Jean and I were hot and heavy. Then her Aunt Callie Rae warned me off, sayin’ I’d never be good enough. Seeing as the women in Baylee Jean’s family all have witch blood, and I figured Callie Rae was fixin’ to do something unmentionable to my man parts, I agreed. But now suddenly, Baylee Jean–smart, sexy, wild–is all over me. She wants me bad–hell, who doesn’t? But, if there’s one woman who could bring a hound dog to heel, it might be her. . .

“Irreverent, bawdy, laugh out loud funny. The most hilarious book I’ve read in years–maybe ever! In fact, I’m pretty sure this book is the reason the term “ROFLMAO” was invented. If you combined Jeff Foxworthy’s humor and Jason Stackhouse’s good looks and libido, you’d end up with Jimmie Joe Johnson, one smokin’ hot hound dog and one hilarious read!” –New York Times bestselling author C.L. Wilson

I sat down with (in the online interwebby sense) Lindsey to get the inside scoop on Jimmie Joe, the woman fated to bring him to heel, and writing books that defy the romance box.  Here’s what our country Ruby had to say:

Vivi: The voice is practically a character in the book – it’s so strong and unique, and really gives a powerful sense of place and perspective. Did it come naturally, like writing in your own voice, or have you developed it as you would a character? How did you find that fun “Hick Lit” voice?

Lindsey: I’d have to say it comes naturally. My husband refers to us (our friends included) as ‘hilljacks’. And they say write what you know. The pool team in Jimmie Joe’s story is based loosely on my own eight ball team. We qualified for Vegas several years back, so I decided to have Jimmie Joe’s team do the same. Jimmie Joe’s pool team/friends are all the real nicknames of my own pool team. They got a big kick out of being included in the story. 🙂

Vivi: Jimmie Joe Johnson: Manwhore doesn’t fit into any neat little marketing boxes, but the books we talk about most are never the ones that are exactly like everything else. Jimmie Joe earned his buzz by being a unique romance. Can you tell us a bit about writing the book of your heart and finding a publisher who believes in it? Any tips for other authors who write outside the box?

Lindsey: Jimmie Joe Johnson: Manwhore is definitely what you would call ‘out of the box’ when it comes to a romance. This book actually started out as several humorous, somewhat ornery scenes with Jimmie Joe in them. The first scene was more of a pick-me-upper for myself after receiving a rejection on one of my books. I needed something to make me laugh. I shared the scene with my friends at Writers At Play. They loved it and asked for more. So I wrote more. Pretty soon I had almost 40 double-spaced pages of Jimmie Joe ‘scenes’ written. My good friend, Janice Lynn, told my agent, Michelle Grajkowski from 3 Seas Literary Agency, about Jimmie Joe. She told me she had to read it and to send it to her. I told her it was only a few scenes, but she insisted. She loved it and sent off what she had to a few editors. We had immediate responses. They all loved it, but didn’t know where to put it. Afterall, there’s not really a ‘hick lit’ romance genre out there. But Alicia Condon loved Jimmie Joe and refused to give up on finding a place for him. So when Kensington decided to start eKensington, she called Michelle to see if I’d be willing to have Jimmie Joe be one of the launch books for their new line. The rest is history!

Vivi: You’ve self published under your own name, as well as with your pseudonym Kat Brookes (Young Adult), but with Jimmie Joe you’re working with a publisher. What made you decide to go that route with this book and what did you take away from the process?

Lindsey: The books I’ve self-pubbed under Lindsey Brookes and Kat Brookes all did really well in the RWA contest circuit, but they weren’t picked up by any publishers. Some had been really close to selling, but Harlequin lines shut down, and in one case moved to M & B (the old Tempation line). So I decided to publish those on my own and have done very well. My agent still has my Golden Heart finaling manuscripts on her desk. So hopefully one day they’ll find a home, too.

I could have self-published Jimmie Joe, but my agent and Alicia believed so much in this story that I decided to sign on with Kensington. Besides, I would have been crazy to turn down the opportunity to be a launch author for their new line. I have to say that Alicia Condon is an incredible editor to work with . I look forward to working with her on future Possum Hollow books.

Vivi: At one point Baylee Jean says “Jimmie Joe might be a hound dog, but he had a good heart. One that rightly belonged to me.” She has such confidence that Jimmie Joe is the one. He’s the modern day rake, the living definition of the loveable bad boy we all want to reform and Baylee Jean is just determined enough to do it. How did you come up with the right girl to bring this hound dog to heel?

Lindsey: I love that you refer to him as a modern day rake. A woman called him that last year after Michelle, Alicia, myself and C.L. Wilson did a workshop and talked about the book. It fits him so perfectly!

As for Baylee Jean, she’s simply followin’ her heart! She believes in what she and Jimmie Joe had in the past and is stubborn enough to fight to get him back after past secrets are revealed. And what better way to tame a self-proclaimed ‘hound dog’ than to use the book he’d given her when they were younger on How To Train A Hound Dog?

Vivi: Possum Hollow (I’m still grinning about the name after reading about Lyle *wink*) is chock full of colorful characters. Who was your favorite to write of all the denizens of Possum Hollow?

Lindsey: Loved the scene with Lyle and Jimmie Joe, too (same scene as you are referring to I bet)! I had so much fun creating all the characters in Possum Hollow. Jimmie Joe’s younger twin brothers, Case and Levi, were a hoot to write. Alicia wanted me to give Jimmie Joe some siblings, so I added them in after the fact. Leroy Parker, who likes to shoot things up all the time, was fun. Jimmie Joe’s daddy as Elvis. Even Callie Rae’s car, an old hearse she repainted Pepto Bismal Pink. Heck, it was all fun to write. I’ve never enjoyed writing a story as much as I did this one. But then I like silly things.

Vivi: What’s next for you? Will there be more books from Possum Hollow? Maybe one (I hope) featuring Randi Lynn & Skeeter?

Lindsey: Alicia wants two more books in the series. I’m working on the second book right now. You’ll be happy to know it’s Skeeter and Randi Lynn’s story!

Vivi: Woohoo! I’ll be watching for it. 🙂

And for those of you who haven’t already experienced Jimmie Joe, you can get a piece of the man himself here: AMAZON :: B&N. And comment by Sunday at 5pm EST for a chance to win some Possum Hollow swag! The book is pure playful fun, so chime in and tell us what is the book you’ve had the most FUN reading lately or about your favorite scoundrel hero.
