2019 Golden Heart Finalist Claire DeWolf on the Book That Surprised Her

Today we’re welcoming another Omega, Claire DeWolf, a 2019 Golden Heart Finalist whose book LOLITA’S MUSE is a finalist in the Mainstream with Romantic Elements category.

Claire DeWolf (seen below in her role of Golden Heart Finalist and Hollywood wife) is a former actress turned editorial writer and community organizer. The mother of a grown son, she lives in the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu with her husband, a forty-year Hollywood veteran. When she’s not attending Hollywood functions or traveling with her husband, you will find her in her home office working on her next book.

The real Claire DeWolf behind the scenes wears braids and walks her dog around the neighborhood in her writer’s uniform—t-shirts and zany yoga pants. She is a consummate foodie and believes that crafting a debut novel is like making fine jam. Use the best ingredients, craft it carefully, and then cook it down to its essence without too much sugar.

Claire and her husband of 33 years just adopted a two-month-old mini red poodle puppy named Bingley. (Named after Mr. Charles Bingley of Netherfield Hall.) Young Bingley, like the man for whom he was named, is an affable gentleman with a true heart. He loves to play with toys, give everyone kisses and cuddles, and is a good boy until he pees in the house. Mr. DeWolf will be very grateful if his wife would potty train Mr. Bingley before she goes to RWA Nationals. Claire is making no promises.

Here’s the awesome Elevator Pitch for LOLITA’S MUSE:

Lolita’s Muse is an over-fifty ménage à trois that explains why #metoo had to happen in Hollywood. With Tantric sex.

And here’s the full back-cover blurb:

Blacklisted as a young screenwriter, Liz Attwood hid behind pen names and her husband’s legend to become Hollywood’s top script doctor, only to lose it all when he died. Grieving, near bankrupt, and unable to write the romance novels that pay her bills, she goes to the sensual yoga retreat that had sparked her spicy Lolita Yardley novels to find inspiration. Instead, she finds two muses who spark her inner Lolita.

Together, Jake Daggett and Marcus Faraday embody everything she wants in a lover and a muse, and she wants to keep them both. But when scandal threatens everything, Liz must choose between hiding behind another man, or facing her crippling fears and step out from behind her husband’s legend to claim her rightful place in the spotlight.

When life gives you two choices, take both.

Now there’s a spicy mantra you can live by—“take both!”!! LOLITA’S MUSE sounds terrific, and I love that it’s “an over-fifty ménage à trois!” Can’t wait for this to be out!!

Folks, Claire DeWolf is here today with a guest blog about the surprising origins of her Golden Heart book, and how a book she never meant to write came to be far more meaningful than she expected.

 Take it away, Claire!

The Surprise Book

Once upon a time, I swore I’d never live in LA. Later, after I’d had a child and became an avid romance reader, I swore I’d never write a romance novel. Writing romance was hard. I didn’t understand the beats and my dream was to write historical fiction. (Yeah, I know. I can be boneheaded.) Once I learned a lot more and I started writing romance, I swore I’d never write about the film industry. Especially not the ugly side I knew too well.

But in 1985, I moved to LA and met and married the love of my life. In 1995, I joined the Orange County Chapter of RWA and found my tribe. And in 2014, out of my fingers came a book about the film business. That book became Lolita’s Muse, my Golden Heart Finalist.

The first two swear-breakers happened because of rational decisions. I came to LA after earning my SAG and AFTRA cards. I’d never spent any time in New York City and I had family here. I still didn’t have an Actors Equity card and I figured that it was better to starve than freeze and starve.

Who Are the Nice Girls Writing Naughty?

We all know writing can be a solitary profession, and it can feel even more lonely trying to get discovered in the vast sea of published writers.

So two years ago this month, Ruby Sister Dani Wade pulled together a group of erotic romance writers–including her twin Ella Sheridan and Ruby Sister Lara Archer, plus a group that now includes Angel Payne, A. Catherine Noon (of the writing team Noon & Wilder), Leela Lou Dahlin, Nona Raines, Taige Crenshaw, Dakota Trace, Tina Christopher, and Tina Holland–to work together to connect with more readers.

Since we all write super-sexy romances, with a definite emphasis on the romance, the group is called Nice Girls Writing Naughty, or The Nice Girls for short.

Whats-Your-Pleasure-PartyIt’s been a fun run, with a group blog, and an active Nice Girls Writing Naughty Readers’ Facebook Group where we can get together and play with our readers through daily posts and very lively monthly events that have included Fantasy Date Night, last month’s What’s Your Pleasure Party, and movie nights (believe me, watching While You Were Sleeping or The Princess Bride in the online company of lots of bawdy-minded women commenting on the action is an experience not to be missed). We always offer lots of prizes, share excerpts from our latest books, and of course post pictures of the gorgeous men who inspire our stories.

And speaking of our stories, today we’re releasing our first group anthology, The Charmed Bracelet: Love Stories Linked Through Time.

charmed braceletThe four sensual stories in the collection are linked by a mysterious golden bracelet which has a knack for bringing together unlikely pairs of lovers in very hot (and very romantic) ways.

From Regency England to modern day Chicago, the stories reach through centuries and across continents.

A widow born to wealth and the military hero who loves her…
The determined young woman and the man she rescued from the streets…
A feisty waitress and the financier who always appears when she needs help…
A computer programmer and the cop who saves her life…

Fabulous stories, and it’s just 99 cents!

To celebrate both our second anniversary and the anthology, the Nice Girls are holding The Charmed Anniversary Event over the next few days. This event will be a Facebook Blog Hop, with each of the Nice Girls featuring the particular charm they’re adding to the bracelet (along with info about their Charming Hero and interactive games for participants to play). Participants can win prizes at any of the stops. If they “collect” all the charms and enter them in a Rafflecopter, they have a chance to win a finished charm bracelet featuring real-life versions of all the charms. Super cute and thematic fun!

Here’s what the finished bracelet with all the actual charms will look like:

BEFORE SHE WAKES release and giveaway!

Today I’m very pleased to be celebrating my fourth release since my Ruby Golden Heart final for GHOST PLANET back in 2009. In some ways this book represents a change for me—it’s my first release of aBeforeSheWakesCovern erotica title. But BEFORE SHE WAKES is full of romance, fantasy, and sci-fi (in other words, plenty of geeky bits), which have all been part of my author brand since the beginning. Also, while my other titles were published by Tor Books, this one comes from the Penguin Random House romance e-print, Loveswept.

BEFORE SHE WAKES has a fun history, in that I wrote the first scene of the first story, The Garden Rules, as an experiment (when I was supposed to be working on one of my other books, ahem). I had no idea whether I’d be any good at erotica. A couple of beta readers liked it and encouraged me, and I even got a manuscript request from Kindle Singles, but still it was more than a year before I worked up the nerve to finish it. When I did, my agent was so enthusiastic that I decide to write and indie publish a series.

So with the help of my agency, I published two shorts. But I quickly found I did not have enough time to put into promotion to make the stories a success. I also wasn’t sure about the market for short stories sold individually. So we decided to pitch the collection to a couple of digital-first lines. I was very pleased (and frankly, stunned) that we quickly got back two offers. And everything moved pretty quickly from there.

The best thing about this collection (that ended up being six stories) is it’s the most fun I’ve ever had on a writing project. I didn’t start it with the intention of seeking a traditional publisher, so I sent my internal critic on extended leave and I wrote whatever I wanted to. Every time I’d think of a scene or plot twist and that critic crept back to whisper in my ear, “That’s TOO much, TOO weird, tone it down,” I very deliberately went right ahead with whatever it was. (So if you read the book and come to a scene with a purple fairy and think “whoa!”,  you’ll know exactly what happened.) And as I expected, what you’ll see in reviews are a number of comments such as:

For those readers with a sense of adventure who are looking for a change of pace and aren’t afraid to go thereBefore She Wakes is a wonderful, sexy, titillating trip to the other side of speculative fiction, that side you’ve been curious about but until now, haven’t been brave enough to try. Be bold. Take the plunge. And have some fun.  (Books, Bones & Buffy book blog)

If your curiosity is piqued by all this, name your favorite fairy tale in the comments for a chance to win one of two e-copies. (Leave contact info, or plan to come back and check comments to see if you won.) Also you can check out a story for free (The Dragonfly Prince) on Instafreebie.

And now I’m off to mix the cocktail I’ve chosen in honor of the day, The Green Fairy.

Release Party: Bared to the Viscount by Lara Archer

Break out the champagne, it’s Lara Archer’s release party. Happy book birthday, Lara!

Wait, who is this Lara character, you may ask? She’s a long-time friend and incognito Ruby who also writes under a different pen name. And today I’m happy to announce is her historical erotic romance debut with Bared to the Viscount.

Let’s get right to the good stuff, shall we?

Bared to the Viscount by Lara Archer

Poor, plain spinster Mary Wilkins has no business falling in love with Viscount Parkhurst. They may have been best friends in childhood, but he’s the wealthy, powerful lord of the manor now, and everybody knows he’s bound to marry a beautiful local heiress. Mary tries to resign herself to a life of hopeless yearning, but when she and the viscount find themselves entangled in a stand of wild blackberry vines, unexpected passions flare.

The viscount can’t seem to keep his hands off her. But is he planning to make her his wife—or only his secret mistress?

Meet Golden Heart Finalist Elle Mason!

Today we’re delighted to welcome another Dragonfly, Elle Mason, a Finalist in the brand-new Erotic Romance category with SORTING OUT THE KINKS. (As Elle says, the category is “probably obvious by the title alone!”)

Elle is a wife, mom of a preschooler and terrier, social worker, the person people seek for advice when visiting The Mouse, wannabe photographer, and a jokester. She’s lived in the West, Northeast, and has called South Florida home for the past ten years. In her relatively short history as a writer, she’s learned she has a thing for gerunds, British spelling of words (though American), and that she loves to write steamy sex scenes.

While we were talking about the Dragonflies, Elle sent me a world map showing where the 2015 Finalists live—across three continents!—and (mostly because I love anything that suggest Romance World Domination) I wanted to share it with all of you:

Now here’s a blurb for SORTING OUT THE KINKS:

Meet Golden Heart Finalist Caroline Bradley!

Today, we’re thrilled to be introducing the first of our guests from the newly-minted Class of 2015 Golden Heart Finalists. Caroline Bradley is a nominee in the Erotic Romance category with her manuscript INDULGE MY FANTASY.

It’s especially delightful to welcome her here to celebrate her Golden Heart nomination because (under another name…ssshhhh!!!) she’s been a Friend of the Rubies for years and has done fabulously in our annual Make It Golden Contest. We’ve seen this moment coming for her for quite a while now, and we know how well deserved it is!

caroline bradleyINDULGE MY FANTASY is the first time Caroline dipped her toe in the Erotic Romance waters, but she enjoyed it so much, she’s back for more with her newest completed manuscript, HEATED COMPETITION. Her alter ego wrote contemporaries until Caroline decided to step out of the shadows and take a walk on the wild side. She’s having so much fun, she may never go back.

Caroline lives in the Philadelphia suburbs with her two teenage sons and a very noisy boisterous cat. She’s never ever telling who inspired her fantasies…

So what’s INDULGE MY FANTASY about?

Auto mechanic Grace Bennett has forgotten how to dream. Her life is so entrenched in the everyday world that when she finds Aaron Elias, the hottest actor in Hollywood, stranded on a mountain road in a snowstorm, she’s not sure what to believe. In a snowed-in cabin, she gives in to her wildest fantasies, but she’s sure he’ll forget her name the moment she repairs his water pump and sends him on his way.

After one night together, Aaron can’t get Grace out of his head. He brings her to Hollywood to experience his world of sports cars, Malibu beach houses, and movie magic. The Cinderella treatment is more than Grace ever imagined. Then she finds out why Aaron was really up in the mountains that day, and Aaron’s dream world brings back Grace’s nightmares.

Grace and Aaron can’t live in each other’s world. Is this love or are they both just indulging their fantasies?

Okay, that sounds utterly delicious. And I’m going to hit that pre-order button so hard the minute HEATED COMPETITION is up for sale. Wooooot!!!Now some questions for you. Caroline, tell us a little about your Golden Heart finaling book and the process of writing it.
