Winter Writing Festival Launch & Registration Day!

We now declare the Winter Writing Festival OPEN!

Let the Games begin!!

To play along, all you need to do is add a comment below in which you:

1) define how *you personally* will earn your Festival “points”

and

2) commit to earning 50 points by the end of February.  (Further details on goal-setting follow below).

But to get the most from the Winter Writing Festival, leave your comment here, then jump over to our special Festival site, rsswwf.com, and officially register.  (You can reach the Festival site at any time by coming here and clicking on the light-blue box to the upper right.)

You can participate without registering officially, but if you register, you can use the Festival site to get your Participant badge, take part in chat-room challenges, share your experiences on the Brag Blog, connect with other Participants, find inspiration and links to Ruby posts on craft, update your daily progress, and check out fantabulous Winter Writing Festival swag. What’s not to love? (Our thanks to Ruby Sister Liz Bemis of bemispromotions.com for designing both sites!!)

A quick review of the goal-setting and point-scoring rules:

Everybody gets one bonus point TODAY for coming here to the Ruby blog and making a public commitment to take part in the Festival. Then, for each of the 49 days of the Festival (including today), you work to earn an additional point—and you define what it takes to earn that point.

Here are some examples of the sorts of things you might define as worth one point (you fill in the variables with the amounts that work for you):

  • writing X number of words or pages
  • deep revising Y number of pages
  • polishing Z number of pages
  • freewriting / brainstorming for Q number of minutes/hours
  • doing R number of 20-minute writing sprints
  • keeping butt in chair and hands on keyboard for S number of minutes or hours

For instance, one person might commit to earning points according to the following terms:

  • writing 500 words per day  OR
  • deep revising 10 pages per day OR
  • doing a final polish on 25 pages per day

Any day that person meets ANY of those goals, she gets a point.

YOU set the goals that meet your personal writing style and writing needs. If you can’t meet your goal on any particular day, you can certainly double or triple or quadruple your goal on another day to catch up. And if you know ahead of time that you can never work on certain days (say, Saturdays) feel free to add something like “keep balance in my life by taking Saturday off” to your personal list of ‘ways to earn a point.’ Don’t be shy.

Remember, we all have different life commitments and different approaches to our writing lives, so we all need to set our own goals. All goals are equally worthy. This isn’t a competition, it’s a supportive process for MOVING FORWARD WITH OUR WRITING.

We want the Festival to work for YOU!

Check in here at the Ruby blog every Friday during the Festival to report your progress (and be entered in random drawings for some of the Festival Swag). If you reach the end of February with a nice round 50 points, YOU WIN!!

117 Responses to “Winter Writing Festival Launch & Registration Day!”

  1. Commenting to earn my first point!! And I’m giving myself permission to write crap. I’ll fix it in 50 days. :)

  2. Kim Law says:

    Yay…One point for me!

    OK…I commit to either:
2.5 hours a day (editing, writing, plotting) OR
    1,500 new words a day

Woohoo!!!! Can’t wait to see what I’ve accomplished by the end of February!

  3. A point! I’ve earned a point! Only 49 more to go.

Goals: I have deep editing to do which will, I’m sure, require lengthy rewrites. So, rather than do a word or page goal, I’m going with BIC goal. (No HOK some days, and RPIN would mean nothing to anyone but me. Oh, Red Pen In Hand. LOL)

No less than three hours per day working on revising, polishing, and editing on of my GH manuscripts. On the days Hubble needs to go to the doc, I will forego BIC, but will take work with me and piece those hours together if need be.

    Sound like a plan?

    And they’re OFF!

  4. Vivi Andrews says:

For me one point will be either 2K new words OR 10K revisions. (and I reserve the right to reassess on Feb 1)

Now to get to work earning a point!

  5. Contessica says:

My goals is to write 1k a day Monday to Friday and/or 3 pages of revising per day.

Saturdays are for my sanity and Sundays are for sleeping:)

  6. Shoshana Brown says:

    For each point I will:

Write 500 words / day or
Deep revise 5 pages / day or
Do a final polish on 15 pages / day

Yay! This is going to be fun.

  7. Elisa Beatty says:

This is a crazy time of year for me (semester grades due, and seniors sweating bullets over them).

So my goals are on the modest side, but will means SO MUCH to me (since otherwise I’ll get NOTHING done between now and the end of February.):

    500 words a day
    OR
    1 hour BICHOK

    • Katrina says:

Better to be realistic and feel motivated and proud of your achievements than to be unrealistic and beat yourself up over not accomplishing them. Smart move, Elisa!

  8. Joan K. Maze says:

I will commit to 2 hours per day, starting with research for the first 10 days at least, in order to get info so I can revise the complete draft I finished in November (NaNoWriMo). Following that, I’ll do a mixture of research and revising.

Also, for the last 4 days of January, I will do double the amount of hours as I will be having surgery on February 1 and will be unable to do a thing for at least 4 days. I’ll be in rehab for a minimum of 2 weeks but will have my laptop with me. Hopefully, they’ll have Wi-Fi.

    Joan

  9. Checking in with my goals:

    — Write at least 200 words on Beth & Cody’s story OR

    — Do intensive edit of at least 1 chapter of Meg & Matt or Kenny & Kristi OR

    — Read one article in one of the many unread issues of RWR I have on file OR

    — Write a blog post of at least 150 words for my writing blog, Love & Laughter. Posts for the weight loss blog don’t count.

I plan to get off to a good start with a write-in Monday.

  10. Shannon LR Dunham says:

I will revise 1000 words a day or write 1000 words a day. If I do both it can be writing 500 and revising 500… there are big gaps in my novel that go from a paragraph to three pages of dialogue thus allowing for this. I have six kids so I think this is a nice goal that will not kill me like NaNo does! Thank you for this!

    Shannon

    • Elisa Beatty says:

Writing with six kids! Hats off to you! Glad this is more manageable than NaNo!!

      • Shannon LR Dunham says:

I have two whole novels because of NaNo but I end up crazy, sick and unable to write for a month or two because of it. Setting my own goals!!!! This is perfect. Now I can revise and write and do what each day needs or allows and not have only 30 days to do it!
So excited to start later today.

        Shannon

  11. Liz Bemis says:

YAY for today’s freebie point! :D I will spend 2 hours of BIC-HOK (editing/querying or new writing) OR 1000 words of new writing.

  12. Becca says:

    Free point!!
30 mins on AFFA or an active outing with my kids will earn a point (need to fill well too).
    =)
    This is so exciting.

  13. Lynn Cahoon says:

    Yay – a challenge!

I will write 500 words a day OR spend thirty minutes in writing activities (including blogging or preparing submissions.) Writing activities will NOT include reading blogs, reading emails or research.

  14. Carla says:

I’m in! I’m committing to *at least* 1000 words each weekday–more is better but at least 1K–and one blog post per week, including weekends, which in my case are hard to schedule, even in advance; such is the life of the mother of teenagers. I blew it at NaNo so thank you for giving me the chance to redeem myself! Point me! :)

  15. Yay, feeling good about that first point. On the scoreboard! And for more I commit to getting up two hours before work and writing. One hour every weekend for editing.

  16. Tina Joyce says:

So excited to get started. It’s great we get to start off with a bonus point just for setting our goals! Yay!

Goals: I commit to either writing 1,000 new words per day *or* 500 new words and 10 pages of final polish on a requested manuscript per day *or* 20 pages of final polish on a requested manuscript per day.

    Let the games begin!

  17. Tamara Hogan says:

At least 2 BICHOK hours per day, at least 6 days per week.

  18. Rita Henuber says:

1000 words a day and or 5 pages deep revisions. I am giving my self permission to take a day even two off a week as long as I meet the weekly goal of 6000 words/25 pages of revisions.
    Now off to get started

  19. Kelly Fitzpatrick says:

Write 1000 new words per day or revise/edit 3 chapters or equivalent combo.

  20. Okay, lessee…

    My point-earning commitment is either

    500 words per day OR
    5 deep revision pages

Because I will take Fridays off and Real Life will no doubt intrude somewhere, if a day is missed, points can be made up by doubling goals on the following weekend That is, new words AND deep revisions will earn one point each for the day.

Is that legal?? Can I do that?? I mean, I know I can technically make up my own rules but not sure I can redistribute points that way. Can I??

    • You can do whatever your heart desires, Jen. Nobody’s going to judge you or call you on the carpet for anything. I’m going to include various non-writing things in my plan.

    • Elisa Beatty says:

Absolutely! Doubling or tripling or quadrupling points on any given day can make up for a deficit! We wrote that right into the original rules. (You can even do five or six times the daily goal, but I don’t know the terms for five and six times….so I didn’t put those in.)

Keep that skull and crossbones flying high!!

  21. Diana Layne says:

I’ve got a few projects going and I can’t choose so my goals are varied.

    write 500 words/day
    deep revise 10 pages/day
    final polish 25 pages/day
    write a query
    plot for two hours

  22. I’m committing to 500 words a day (and whether those come through the deep editing I’m doing or a new scene doesn’t matter). Good luck, everybody!! (Arlene, see you at the write-in!)

  23. Katrina says:

    I’m in! I’m in! And I’m hyper!

I had my writing time this morning and already hit one of my daily targets. Good thing I forgot I’d get a point just for showing up today!

    Here are my goals:

writing 500 words per day in my manuscript OR
revising 10 pages a day OR
writing 500 words of character background OR
writing one chapter of plot outline OR
polishing one chapter a day OR
    writing one blog post OR
    spending one hour researching

So looking forward to this! Thanks for organizing it!

  24. My goals:

write at least 200 new words (up from my usual 100)
    OR
revise/edit for at least one hour

See you all on the WWF page! N.

  25. Laura Kaye says:

Hey all–Happy Day One! Here are my goals (they’re all over the place because I’m about to finish one WIP and begin a new one during these 50 days):

*writing 1,000 words per day OR
*deep revising one chapter per day OR
*doing a final polish on 3 chapters per day OR
*story development work for 3 hours per day OR
    *completing a synopsis OR
*commenting on my critique partners’ manuscripts for 2 hours per day OR
*completing that day’s Editpalooza assignment (thru 1/30) OR
*doing research to identify agents for the WIP for two hours per day OR
    *getting a agent/editor request=2 points OR
*selling a manuscript=50 points lol OR
*resisting a pastry or cookie at Panera per day

PS–any one know why some people’s profile pages show up/work on the rsswwf site and others don’t? When I click on my name, I get a mostly blank page that doesn’t fill in with my entered profile/bio/goals info…

  26. Jess says:

Hooray, one point for me. 500 Words or 10 pages deep revisions or 25 pages polish per day for five days per week. Edits for my book came in during the NaNo, so I flopped on the NaNo, so this is just what I needed.

  27. Kelli Scott says:

500 new words or 2 chptr edits/revisions per day.

  28. Dara says:

I’m in. Writing at least 500 words per day, on whatever story I choose. :)

  29. Kali says:

    *600 Words/day
*2000 Words on Mommy’s Free Day (thank you in-laws!)
*Sitting in front of my computer with Word file open and browser window closed for 1/hour (min)
*Think about WIP at least a dozen times on hubby’s days off (he’s such s distraction!)

  30. Can I admit that I saw the pretty widget and decided to participate?

    1. Write 1250 words
    2. Polish 25 pages
    3. Write 1 blog post

Yay, 49 more points to go!

  31. YES. (Fist jamming air) I love free points.

My goal 500 words a day with one day off to be the other me. Like Anne, I’ll get them anyway I see it needs to be done, through new pages or rewrites.

Off to keep busy and earn another point.

  32. Bonnie Kay says:

    I’m in and committed!

    My terms:

    Write 100 Words/Day AND
Deep Revise 5 Pages Per Day (VLT) OR
Create GMC Sheets for Primary Characters (VLT) OR
Take Wednesdays off for Work/School/Life/Writing Balance OR
Take Thursdays off for Work/School/Life/Writing Balance OR
Write a query letter (VLT) OR
Add 100 Words to a Synopsis (VLT)

I have an agent appointment in June and I want this revision done!

  33. Lea Nolan says:

I’m so excited! My goal is to write 2000 words per day.

  34. [...] those of you who wish to get farther on your writing this month, check out the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood’s Winter Writing Festival. The best part of this: you set your own goal. That could be writing 500 words a day or editing x [...]

  35. Kelley Bowen says:

She shoots. She scores…I’m on the board with one!

Goals for the next fifty days:
Revise 5 pages of my GH entry OR Write 10 pages of my WIP OR Attend a workshop OR Read two craft articles and apply them to my GHE or WIP

Sundays will be spent with my two little boys and my husband (with whom I will try to score…can I get a point for that?) because they are the ‘point’ of everything.
Thanks for all the work on the WWF, Rubies. (Raising my virtual champagne glass) Here’s to meeting and exceeding goals.

  36. I’m so in.

1 point for any of the following:

4 hours BICHOK (no email, blogging, or nonsense)
    4 hours researching
    4 hours revising
    4 hours plotting/planning
    4 hours volunteering @ zoo
    4 hours remodeling/cleaning the house

    Ready, set, GO!

    • Katrina says:

Holy cow – 4 hours! That’s a great goal. And do you really volunteer in a zoo, or is that code for taking care of your cats and other assorted animals?

      • Katrina, you’re sweet, but 4 hours is somewhat of a cop-out on my part. I don’t do much else besides write (like, I have no other job, and no kids), so I could probably reach for 6 hours and achieve it, but I wouldn’t have time to do much else in the day. The dust bunnies would have to cook dinner.

And yes! I do volunteer in a zoo. The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. I also used to volunteer at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo. I’m primarily an animal handler, so I do a lot of exercise and enrichment for the creatures in our outreach and education department collection, AKA “The Animal Embassy.”

  37. Miranda Liasson says:

At least 2 hrs BICHOK/day divided into any combination of researching/plotting/writing/deep revising/polishing. No chapter business, judging, critiquing, or blogging included during BICHOK time. And permission to take Sundays off.

Thank you Ruby Sisters for all this fun and fellowship that will drive the winter blahs away!

  38. Felicia Lind says:

I’m so going to do this!

To earn 1 point I must:

    - write 500 words OR

    - spend 1 hour revising

And now I need to get cracking! :)

  39. I’m on board — and totally motivated!

I’m committing to at least 2 hours per day of BICHOK, which should include deep editing of last two thirds of my crappy first draft, polishing the first third for contest submissions, deep editing of an old manuscript, or plotting/brainstorming/researching a new WIP.

  40. Thank you to TRSS for organising this event – just wheat I need to give me a kick up the bum to get my current WIP revised so I can submit it to my publisher this year, sooner rather than later.

(And thanks also to Science Fiction Romance for pointing me in this direction.

My goals are, 1 point for:

Deep Revising 10 pages per day on my current WIP

OR doing a complete re-write of a section of my current WIP (Min 500 words)

OR spending two hours or more working on revising current WIP

Saturday is for catching up on my own Blog, and emails, website etc.

    Sunday is for R & R

  41. Anna says:

My goals are calibrated around first and foremost keeping me writing. I have adjusted goals based on some travel and new volunteer work I will be taking on beginning in early February.

Weekdays through the end of January: 2k new words/day.

Jan 31 – Feb 1 off due to travel. Point on Jan 31 for catching my plane and point on Feb 1 for getting from airport to my hotel.

Feb 2, 3, 4 – 1500 total new words during those three days that can be written at any time as long as they’re done by Feb 4.

Weekdays through end of February: 1k new words/day.

One half Saturday point for reviewing/editing list of upcoming scenes in WIP for at least twenty minutes. One half Saturday point for knitting at least half an hour.

One half Sunday point for doing something nice for myself. One half Sunday point for knitting for at least half an hour. (January 17 will fall under Sunday rules.)

This is awesome! You guys are so clever. What will the Red Ruby Sisterhood think up next? :)

  42. Laurie Kellogg says:

I’ll be doing a combo of polishing a final draft and writing a first draft. So my goal is EITHER 30 pages of polishing or 500 NEW words.

  43. Sabrina says:

So glad to join in and excited to kick-start my writing.

Here are the goals I will accomplish in order to earn 1 point:

Writing 500 words per day OR
Doing 5 20-minute Writing Sprints in a day OR
BIC writing for 1 FULL Hr. OR
Spending my lunch break writing instead of tweeting

    Good luck everyone!

  44. Jessica D says:

Thank you, Ruby Sisters, for setting up this terrific festival.

    My goals are:

Writing 250 new words per day OR
    Revising 5 pages per day.

And I’m happy to say I wrote 300 words on my lunch hour, so with this post, I’m at 2 points already! Hooray! It’s nice to be back in the writing groove.

  45. Anne Barton says:

    Grabbing my point!

I’m revising a ms, so my overall goal is to have a polished ms by the end of the WWF.

5 pages of revisions equals a point for me.

    Thanks, and good luck, everybody!

  46. Hope Ramsay says:

Whew! my meetings for today are over, and AMTRAK has wireless! I WILL get my free point for today…

My writing goals are a little complicated, but here they are: 1 point =

3 hours of writing or editing each weekday (total 15 hrs/week), and
Taking Satuday off (if I make my 15 hours), and
Producing a blog column every Sunday to be posted on RSS or other blog sites where I participate, or judge the Marlene, or provide a critque to a CP on Sunday.

I have been looking forward to this!

    Welcome all non-Ruby participants.

  47. liz talley says:

Late to get mine on here (nasty root canal this morning)

    Okay:

I commit to writing 10,000 words a week
    Completing AFS and synopsis
Revising four chapter on the weekend

Mine’s a big ol’ goal but I’m going to kick it’s butt! I’m behind, so off I go!

  48. Jen Sampson says:

Thanks for organizing this, what a great idea! I’m always looking for ways to motivate myself.

    My goals are:
    250 new words Or
    Revise 5 pages Or
Send out a query letter Or
Fill in one spot in manuscript where I left a comment to fix it later/answer a question

    Good luck, everyone!

  49. Beth Langston says:

I commit to one hour per day.

  50. Oh! I already registered, so I had to go snarf my goals off my profile. Quite a smorgasbord, but here they are:

    - Write 1000 words of new material OR
    - Revise or polish one chapter or 20 pages OR
    - Write a blog article or interview for posting OR
    - Freewrite or brainstorm for 1 hour OR
    - Prepare a query or contest entry for submission

Thanks to the RSS for helping to warm these cold winter days with some friendly writing motivation.

Looking forward to a productive and enjoyable time. Best of luck, everyone.

(Wahoo! I just earned my first point. *grin*)

  51. Amanda says:

    My goals are -

    • Amanda says:

Wow, not a good sign. Let’s try that again, shall we?
My goals are – 500 new words a day, at least 2 hours BICHOK, or polish a scene.

      Let the games begin!

  52. Shea Berkley says:

I have never done anything like this before, so I’m not sure exactly what I’m doing, but I get I have to be productive. (scary how smart I am, huh?) So, my goals Monday-Friday are:

writing 500 words a day or
    revising 10 pages a day

  53. RuthM says:

    Ok, here are my goals.

    500 words per day
sitting at keyboard and typing on ms /60 min
    journal pages 2/day

    Sounds simple, but for me……

    1/50

  54. Joan K. Maze says:

    Hi,

My registration didn’t work. I can’t log in. I tried to get a password (registration didn’t provide a space for one) but never got an email with a password. In the meantime I will work on my story anyway, starting with 2 hours per day of research for the next 10 days, and then switching to research and revision.

    Joan K. Maze (Jazzy)

    • Could it be because you are already registered? There is a Joan Maze registered to the WWF site. Go to the site, put your cursor on About and click participants. Scroll down. If you click the Ruby Slipper, it goes to a page titled About Jazzy.

      Hope this helps.

  55. Woohoo!!! So excited, and I love the name. So festive!

Okay, I think I made my goal 500 words per day, but I’m adding a coulpe:

    500 words per day OR
    3 hours BICHOK for revisions

    Squee!

  56. Patty Hardin says:

Okay, this is scary, but I’ll commit to writing 500 words per day and submitting at least one more picture book manuscript.

  57. Lisa Sorensen says:

Okay—wow! What an amazing amount of progress that’s going to get done in the next 50 days! Fantastic!

    Here’s my part-
    2000 new words OR
    2 hours of revisions OR
2 hours of craft research OR
2 hours of fact research OR
    a chat room challenge

with a point for a weekend day off when I’ve gotten 12 hours of no-nonsense work in.
Also, a bonus point for completing current rough draft by 1/26
And two couple for printing it up!

    Good luck everyone!!

  58. Shasha says:

I look forward to a productive writing year. I work full time and after work I am usually beat. But setting definite writing goals, having a supportive writing process and writing community could be the extra push I need for moving forward with my writing.

    Goals

writing at least 300 words a per day and more if possible except Mondays.

free writing / brainstorming for at least 45 minutes or more if possible on Mondays.

    Shasha

  59. Kate Parker says:

I’m excited about this, but I know some days will be worse than others. Today was one, but I got my 2 new pages written.
Either 2 new pages or revise 20 pages or drive over 350 miles. I know the last sounds crazy, but I have two back to back days next week when I have to drive that much, and then my brain is mush for the rest of the day. And then two more days before the end of the month. But on good days, I get way more than 2 new pages.

  60. I’m in! :) My goals are not so much different from what I’m doing in the 100×100 challenge over at Writing GIAM, but I like the extra incentive of points. And prizes. :)

    Write 100 words (minimum) OR
    Revise/rewrite for 30 minutes OR
Read through outlines/scene sketches/notes for 30 minutes per day (minimum)

  61. Ivy says:

Hey there — found this on another blog. I’ve hardly done any writing at all since The Great NaNoWriMo Fail of 2010, but this looks like a great way to get back on track. I’ll get one point for

    1. Waking up at 7 and sitting with my fingers on the keyboard for a half hour. If anything creative happens in that time, yay! OR
    2. Spending a half hour reading good writing, whether prose or poetry.

Yes… I’m a full-time student with too many friends and classes and activities. This is a huge step up for me. :)

  62. C.J. Chase says:

My schedule changes day by day, so I’m making my goals variable for each day.

And I’m going to count 1 hour of revisions as equal to 500 words, so I can mix and match as needed.

Monday — 1000 words or 2 hours of revisions
Tuesday — 1500 words or 3 hours of revisions
Wednesday — 1000 words or 2 hours of revisions
Thursday — 1500 words or 3 hours of revisions
Friday — 1000 words or 2 hours of revisions

  63. I get a point if:

    - I do my artist’s pages AND
    - I write at least 500 words OR
    - I do at least 5 pages of editing

I am totally committed to this course of action.

  64. I just spent 3 luxurious nights at the Greenbrier resort, but rushed home so as not to miss the first day of the festival! Here are my goals:

    Write 1,000 words
    Blog weekly
    Critique someone else’s work
    Beta Read
    Plot a chapter for PFL
    Did promotion for ALWIL
    Attend RWA meeting
Wrote word count above stated goal level
    Attend critique meeting
    Brainstorm new book idea

  65. Misty says:

I’m new here. :) My goals are to write 350 words a day, edit 20 pages or plot. I’m excited for this festival. It came at a great time, thank you ladies!

    Misty

  66. Lynda Bailey says:

Late, but checking in to get my “freebie” point!
    My goals are:
Write 500/day and/or revise at least 5 pages/day. One point if I do one or the other. Two if I get both done!
If I finish my series contemporary, my goal is to have the fast draft of my new YA done and to finish plotting my RS before this fabulous festival is over.
    Whew! I best get started!

  67. Katherine says:

-finish editing 1/2 of a chapter
    -deep revising 5 pages
    -1000 words
    -2 hours spent writing/editing

That’s what I have so far. Thank you for putting this together!

  68. Gaea says:

    A point for either:

    - 90 minutes of writing or a minimum of 500 words in a day on either Romance 1 or Business 1
    - for each weekly blog post
    - Plotting a chapter for either Romance 1 or Business 1
    - Deep editing of 5 pages
    - 2 hours of research
    - 30 minutes of journal writing
    - every time I overcome stress-induced chocolate cravings (just kidding)

  69. Elise Hayes says:

    I’m late to the party–but I’m in!!

I define one point as equal to one hour of my butt in a chair, working on my current wip. I could be revising, writing new scenes, charting GMC, or doing historical research–anything that moves my manuscript forward. What matters is that I’m planning to write one hour a day, 6 days a week.

On weekends, I’m defining one family day (without writing) as worth one point.

And since I spent all day today with my daughter, who was home sick from school (which meant giving up my evening writing hours to do work for my day job), I’m allowing myself 3 “sick” days over the next 6 weeks…days when I have a migraine, my daughter is home sick (or days when we lose electricity due to a snow storm, like last winter). If I don’t need those 3 “sick” days, that will be great. But if I do, I reserve the right to award myself a point for surviving the day…and getting back to my writing the next day.

Ok, in spite of the above caveats (which are designed to keep me from feeling like I’ve already failed on day 1, since I didn’t get any writing done today), I’m really, really excited about this festival–and the writing that I’m going to get done, starting tomorrow!

  70. Cate Rowan says:

I’m in, too! I’m currently doing deep edits to THE SOURCE OF MAGIC, which I want to have up on Amazon/B&N, etc. in the second half of March. My point goals are to:

    - Deep edit an average of 2000 words per day (14,000/week avg.) until this pass is finished
    - Once that’s done, do a final polish on 4500 words (avg.) per day (31,500/wk) until it’s finished
    - Or I can earn a point by spending at least 3.5 hours per day on the revising/polishing even if I don’t make the word goals.

If I stay on track, I’ll be done with this novel a few days before the end of the WWF at the end of Feb and ready to send it to my proofreaders. Woohoo!

  71. Elisa Beatty says:

Awesome to have so many people join us today!

Everyone should check out the rsswwf.com page, and look under “About” at all the participants, and see the comments to the Brag Blog.

We had well over 100 non-Ruby participants signed up by early this afternoon, and many more folks have signed up at one spot or another since then (the instructions were a tad confusing…but rest assured, everybody, if you declared your goals ANYWHERE on either of our two sites, you get your bonus point!!)

    Good luck, all!

  72. So many participants! I’m so stoked!!!

  73. Kate P says:

I commit to spending one hour a day (during the week) to working on my WIP. This should mean I get around 2500 new words a week, but I need to spend some time on research, so as long as the hour is spent in some way related to my manuscript, it counts. Saturday and Sunday are for focusing on the other aspects of my life or as catch up days, if necessary.

Thanks Rubies for creating a fun winter motivator for us!

  74. Melissa Marelic (aka Marissa MacFae) says:

I’m ready to ROCK!!! This Writing Fest is EXACTLY what I need right now to get my New Year started off right to finish up those pesky revisions to my newly completed Scottish Paranormal–plan to pitch my baby at RT in April and enter a few contests in the meantime, starting with the WR this month, oh YAY!!! Best of luck to everyone :)

And today I met my goal of 500 words of fresh material, off to a Rockin’ good start!

    ~Thanks bunches ladies, Mari

  75. Ami Weaver says:

My goal is actually 2 fold. Finish revisions on my GH ms by end of January. (The 31st) To that end, I will spend an hour (minimum) a weekday revising–some of that is on paper, so it’s not really a HOK goal. After that, that same hour will be spent writing a totally new WIP that I’ve been toying with mentally for a month or so now.

    Soooo–yay! Looking forward to this!

  76. Oops! I posted over at the Winter Writing Festival website earlier in the day. Both pages say “leave your comments here” so when I logged in to post that I’d met my goals for Monday, I realized I’d posted on the wrong page. But the good news is that I exceeded my goals for Monday. I wrote a new blog and added 242 words to my WIP. So I figure that deserves one point.
Since the Winter Writing Festival spans 50 days, I’ve set a lower daily goal than I did during the 30 days of NaNo 2010. I managed to write 85,000 plus words during November and now it’s time to complete the first draft and start doing some serious revising.

    My goals are:
Add a new spice to my blog
    OR
    write 500 words per day
    OR
write 200 words AND revise 10 pages

Best of luck to everyone! I’ll see you all over by the fire when we take a break for hot chocolate!

  77. Laura M. says:

Ok, I’m new here – directed here from a fellow writer in the Savvy group. But I’ll jump in. I haven’t really written in a long time. Lost a lot of confidence in my writing so I tend to think of lots of story ideas or scenes in my head all the time – and I mean constantly – but when I sit down to write them I go blank. So my goals are going to be modest and hopefully this can kick start me back into what I really want to do!

    My goals:
500 words per day on any one of the 4 story ideas
    OR
    1 hour research
    OR
    1 hour plotting/character development/etc.
    OR
Writing at least one blog per week.

I give myself permission to take Friday OR Saturday off since those are my husbands days off and I give myself permission to take Tuesdays off as those are deadline days for me with my day job and extremely busy (so two days off per week).

I will not revise or edit until I have whatever I’m working on at least half done or I will get too caught up in details and get derailed.

  78. Eve says:

I’ve registered and played along since yesterday! The goal is to edit, revise, or rewrite at least 3 pages per day. I’ve already edited 3 pages yesterday so that’s one point for me? An auspicious start, in any case.

  79. Vernieda says:

A little late registering so I’m a day behind! But here are my goals:

write 500 words per day OR
deep revise for 1 hour OR
    outline for 1 hour

  80. Cathy P says:

I’ve let too many things distract me! This is perfect for getting me back into gear.

    Goals –
    10 pages edit/revision on mscp1, OR
25 pages polishing edit on mscp2, OR
    Send in a submission packet

If I can’t help it and jot down ideas for new mscp that’s just gravy

  81. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by honeycutt and Beth Barany. Beth Barany said: A fun way to get writing after the holiday mayhem! http://bit.ly/hEAq52 [...]

  82. Well, cr**. I registered last week, bookmarked all the appropriate pages, and set my goals–AND spread the word and got a couple of other people to join–and then…

Totally forgot to come over here yesterday.

So if I’m not booted already, here are my goals (copy/pasted from my profile):

Writing 500 words a day OR
Writing a blog post for March promotion OR
Editing a full chapter on any of several WIPs OR
Submitting to an agent or publisher OR
Focusing on family on Saturdays and Sundays

    I did write 3367 yesterday. :)

  83. Jazzy says:

I’m knee deep in research and got so interested the time got away from me. I didn’t look at the clock but estimate a minimum of 2 hours.

    Jazzy

  84. Jumping in late, but I’m taking the plunge! I need to finish revisions on a manuscript ASAP, and overall–ramp up productivity, using time wisely. Thanks for the festival and support, Rubies.

Revising/Editing at least 5 pages or more a day OR
Writing 500 words a day OR
Have BIC 2-4 hours a day, five days of week
    Writing related activites-research/updating website/contest OR
Doing intense timed writing for one hour a week OR
    Focusing on family on weekend

  85. A little late, but here I go!

    - Writing or revising at least 500 words every day Mon-Fri
    - Writing or revising at least one page every weekend
    - Taking rest of the weekends to focus on family and friends

  86. Ooooh, nice to see Twitter friends here. Love this format so if y’all don’t mind I will hop on this bandwagon. Much more human than NaNoMo.

Also realized that I need to not feel guilty about academic writing so will give myself points for that too so 1 point each for:

    Fiction
    –500 words
–45 minutes of solid revising or plotting (what can I say, my brain works on class period schedule)
    –one query or submission

    Academic
    –2 paragraphs
    –1 page of bibliography
–45 minutes of revision or planning
–1 submission of paper, paperwork, or proposal

    Life
    –1/2 mile walk
