RUBY RELEASE – DEATH, TAXES, AND A SEQUINED CLUTCH ONLY $1.99! by Diane Kelly

IRS Special Agent Tara Holloway is up to some new tricks with an old flame in this electronic-exclusive novella, which released yesterday.

I have to admit, the theme of revenge was a fun one to write.  In the novella, Tara returns to the CPA firm where she used to work and faces a partner who had seduced her when she first joined the firm years ago, then summarily dumped her. Nathan Jamison held the power all those years ago, but now Tara is the one with the authority to take him down – if he’s conspired with clients to commit investor fraud.  It gives her no small pleasure to run amok through his audit files and keep him on edge as she performs her investigation.

After a black-tie event, Tara is presented with the opportunity to even the score on a personal level.  Tara, naturally, seizes the chance.  After all, she’s got a trick or two hidden in that sequined clutch of hers . . .

What are some of your favorite books, movies, or TV shows with a revenge theme?  Have you ever fantasized about getting revenge on a former lover?  If so, what types of fun revenge plots have you concocted?  Is revenge always wrong, or can revenge be a form of justice?  Let’s hear what you think!

Woo-hoo!! Another Ruby release! they’re coming thick and fast right now (and I’m already halfway through FOURTH GRAVE, which I just downloaded this morning).

Can’t wait for your latest installment, Diane!!

  2. Gwyn says:

While I can’t think of any vengence themed reads or movies off the top, I will admit to having some very vivid revenge fantasies in my youth. They were oddly satisfying, as I recall, but not particularly vicious. Witty reparte was the weapon of choice, and I’d decimate my foe with brilliant dialogue. Which is probably why I write. Killing without bloodshed works for me. ;-)

  3. Congrats on the release of your novella, Diane! I’m looking forward to seeing Tara get even with Nathan.

Favourite shows with a revenge theme? How about the TV series ‘Revenge’. ;) I still have to catch up on the last six or so episodes from season one, so no one tell me if the heroine succeeds in exacting her revenge over those who killed her father! And it would be very remiss of me not to mention ‘The ‘Princess Bride’, which has a strong revenge subplot. Best movie ever (besides ‘Dirty Dancing’).

    • Diane Kelly says:

I love the show Revenge, too, though, like you, I’m several episodes behind. I like to accumulate them and watch them in a marathon. Makes it easier to keep track of the action and subtle subplots.

    • June Love says:

I love the show Revenge. I’m only one episode behind. Wow. Talk about going to lengths to exact your revenge.

  4. Tamara Hogan says:

Movie, book or TV show with a revenge theme? Yes, like Vanessa, the first one that popped into my head was “The Princess Bride.” “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” Absolutely NO question as to what his GMC is. ;-)

I personally find revenge to be a…wasteful emotion. Feeling vengeful – or worse, acting on such feelings – gives WAY too much power and control to the person who wronged me. I refuse to let someone else emotionally manipulate me, jerk me around by my emotional strings. Studying emotional intelligence has helped me recognize when this is taking place, and modulate my response in a productive direction.

Congrats on your release, Diane! Your covers are SO awesome. It’s RUBY DOMINATION WEEK!

  5. June Love says:

Diane, congratulations on another release. I love the clutch on your cover. Perfect for Halloween. I can’t remember ever getting vindictive revenge on someone. I do remember once trying to kill someone with kindness. Does that count? lol I’ve done “pay backs” before, but in a friendly, prankish kind of way. I can’t say I’ve never thought about it. I do like Tamara’s take on revenge. However, that’s not to say I don’t love revenge books, shows, movies.

  6. Rita Henuber says:

Revenge and justice was certainly the theme in my first book. Redemption in the second. Revenge with a huge dose of justice in the third. I don’t much approve of petty revenge. I mean you made me mad I’ll slash your tires NO. But bringing someone to justice who has murdered and done other dastardly things yes. Am I splitting hairs?

  7. Congrats on the newest release in your series, Diane! Love all your covers…they are the cutest!

Since I write romantic suspense, revenge is usually a pretty big motivators for my villains in a gritty death way. LOL. I can’t think of any revenge plots in movies/TV right now (too early in the morning!) :)

  8. Hope Ramsay says:

The first movie that popped into my mind was Nine to Five. OMG what those secretaries do to their boss was just . . . well hilarious and entirely deserved. :)

Congrats on the new release. Honestly, I can no longer keep up. You know I recently changed from a Kindle to a Nook, and I gave my old Kindle to the DH. He logged in to my Amazon account and was completely flabbergasted by the number of books there — many written by Ruby Sisters. It was probably a bad move on my part, letting him see how bad my reading addiction is — and how well y’all are feeding it.

Going off to download more …

  9. Kay Hudson says:

That Sequined Clutch appeared on my Kindle yesterday, but I’m saving it–because I’m in the middle of Extra Hold Hairspray at the moment.

As for revenge plots, I haven’t written any (although I’m thinking of a subplot . . .), but I’m a fan of Hell on Wheels, which overflows with vengeance. And more to come next year.

  10. Oh, revenge!! What a great theme. I absolutely LOVE The Count of Monte Cristo. (The movie, at least – haven’t made it through the book, though I did try.)

  11. LOVE IT!!!! Super congrats, Ruby Sis! It sounds dee-lish!

  12. Kelley Bowen says:

Diane, I am totally wrapped up in the tv show, REVENGE, and I just finished a book called GONE GIRL, which definitely shares the theme and is wonderfully creepy and totally scary. Guess I’ll have to put another revenge based story on TBR list. Congrats to you! (again)

  13. Kim Law says:

“Have you ever fantasized about getting revenge on a former lover?”

Really? This is YES for everyone, isn’t it? :) Not that there’s anythign wrong with that!!! Nor that I’d tell my plans ;)

Congrats on the new release Diane!! It sounds terrific!

  14. Vivi Andrews says:

I’m late to the party but I wanted to wish you a happy new release and join the PRINCESS BRIDE FOREVER BABY!!! chorus. Cuz I can not express strongly enough how I love that movie. In fact, I might watch it right now. :D

    Happy New Release, Diane!
