Welcome to the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood

Filed in: Misc, blog

We all know the story of how Dorothy got picked up by a wild Kansas twister, whisked through the air, and plunked down in the fabulous Land of Oz, where a Good Witch with a magic wand handed her an enchanted pair of Ruby Slippers.

Finaling in the Golden Heart is a remarkably similar experience—you get that amazing phone call from RWA, and suddenly you’re sailing through the air, head whirling, and nothing in life will ever quite be normal again.

Remember, though: for Dorothy, getting those Ruby Slippers was just the start of the journey. She had a whole Yellow Brick Road to find her way along. The same thing’s true for the 2009 Golden Heart Finalists: that marvelous phone call from RWA was just the start of a complex, scary, exhilarating journey.

This blog is our attempt to share that journey with you. Some of us have found the Emerald City already, others are still dodging flying monkeys and wondering if we’ll ever see poor little Toto again. Hopefully, other writers out there can benefit from our experience, or at least laugh and cry with us along the way.

Since we’re launching this blog on the opening registration day for the 2010 Golden Heart, we’ll spend the first month sharing the inside scoop on what finaling in the Golden Heart is really like—and, Holy Munchkins, do we have stories! We’ll offer insights, advice, and encouragement to help others out there get their feet firmly planted on the Yellow Brick Road.

mugPlus, we’ve got some fabulous giveaways! During our launch month, there will be daily drawings.  One lucky commenter will be randomly selected each day.  You could win the fabulous Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood Mug (pictured to the left) or a critique of your first fifteen pages by a Ruby Sister.  And finally, all commenters are entered in the drawing at the end of our launch month, when three Grand Prize Winners will take home a Ruby-Slippered Sister’s critique of their Golden Heart Entry (see the RWA National site for entry length and format requirements).  Winners will be announced daily on the blog.  Comment early!  Comment often!

Like Dorothy with the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion, we welcome all the company we can get. So link arms with us, and let’s start skipping down those yellow bricks—with a keen eye out for lions, tigers, and bears, but singing at the top of our lungs.

Much love,

The Ruby-Slippered Sisters

Today we will be giving away one of our fabulous mugs AND a chance to win one of the grand prize critiques. Introduce yourself and tell us, do you plan to enter the Golden Heart this year? Have you entered it in the past? What about other contests? If you’re a reader and not a writer, tell us about a contest, award or other honor you’ve received that made you feel like you were on top of the world (with or without the aid of a tornado). :D

Hey Dorothy,

What happends in Oz stays in Oz, unless one of your Sisters happens to be a snich and we read about it as a thinly veiled story plot? Can’t wait.

Elisa Beatty says:

“What happens in Oz stays in Oz”…I love it!

Rachel Winter says:

Hello Ruby Slippered ladies.
I am writing to congratulate my dear friend Amy Talley on her news. I can’t believe I am friends with a published author. Amy got me excited about reading romance and I actually was blushing on the last book I read.. Steamy… We will have to discuss her book at my next book club.
Anywhoo…I am commenting in hopes to win a coffee cup. I drink lots of coffee. Especially since I got a new Keuring one cup brewer. It is really cool. I have 3 small kids under the age of 5, so I am tired all the time, but happy. I also have a little bit of ADD, and love science- have a biochem degree so much better with black and white vs. shades of gray in the literary world. I could never dissect a poem in high school. That being said, I devour many books and love to read.
I think it is so fantastic that all of you have the gift to write and write well. I wish you all success in your writing careers and following that yellow brick road on the way to Oz (publication)

Elisa Beatty says:

Thanks, Annie! It’s been a blast from this end. Thanks for joining us!

Katie Harrah says:

Finding this was just the thing I needed! I’m not entering the GH this year, but in 2010, so watching y’all blog about this experience will motivate me to keep at the drafting!

Elisa Beatty says:

Good for you, Katie! Motivation is what we’re all about!

Jennifer Hilt says:

Great name, Motto to envy and red shoes! I’m thrilled to have heard about your site through GSRWA. As a Golden Heart Virgin, I am eager to hear whatever the Sisters share. I plan to enter my YA novel. I worry it is not ready—will it ever be? But I keep writing and re-writing, that is part of the larger sisterhood we all belong to. BTW, your site is awesome! What a talented group of Red Shoe Wearing Women. Keep up the good work. Best, Jen

Vivi Andrews says:

Enter that puppy, Jen! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. And entering the Golden Heart doesn’t mean your writing and rewriting has to come to a screeching halt. We’re always learning new things as writers and applying them. I’m constantly finding ways to improve my manuscripts. So go for the Gold, but keep on writing! :)

Annie West says:

Yay, girls! Congratulations on your new blog site. I look forward to popping in from time to time to see what’s happening here.

Waving a big hi to Vanessa in particular. I hope you all find your GH success leads to even brighter things.

Annie

Waving back atcha, Annie! Thanks for coming along to see what’s happening.

Sarah Haley says:

It was never a matter of if Amy would be published, just a matter of when. The red slippers were already in her writing closet! So far, all I see in mine are brown loafers and white tennis shoes, but the magic could happen. Success such as Amy’s gives hope to all of us who aren’t there yet.

Tamara Hogan says:

Testing, to see if I can get gravitar to finally work… (sigh)

Tamara Hogan says:

Cleared my cache, trying again…

A friend sent me this link today and it made me feel better while I wait. Maybe it’ll make some of you feel better too! It’s a list of 50 Things You Can Control RIGHT NOW, cuz we all know we can’t control the GH finals!
