Live Blogging the 2011 Rita and Golden Heart Finalist Announcements
![]() Posted by Jamie Michele Mar 25 2011, 12:01 am in golden heart, rwa, The RITA Contest NEWSFLASH! 2011 Golden Heart Finalists, join your new friends at your private Yahoo Group. Visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/2011GHFinalists to request an invitation (I think). Group email: 2011GHFinalists@yahoogroups.com Put on your big-girl (or big-boy) panties and stick by the phone, because today’s the day you might be getting the call that launches your career! In case you didn’t know, every year on March 25, the RWA’s Board of Directors calls around 140 talented writers to let them know that they’ve been selected as a finalist for the 2011 Rita award (for published writers) or Golden Heart award (for unpublished writers). Calls usually begin as early as 9 AM CST and tend to peter off around 2 PM CST, and we just love watching the names roll in. Many different sites post finalists’ names, but we’ll hunt them down and post them here the second that we learn of them. So stick with us throughout the day as we cheer on our 2011 finalists, and be sure to let us know as soon as you get a call of your own! PRIZES! PRIZES! PRIZES! The following fabulous prizes were donated by various members of the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood and will be randomly gifted to randomly selected commenters on today’s blog (randomly):
- $25 Barnes and Noble gift card And now…onto the finalists! (Note that there can be as many as eight finalists in any category, or nine in the case of a tie, but it’s impossible to know in advance how many finalists any given category will have. I’ve given each category eight blank slots just as a template; I’ll adjust this as we learn more from RWA today. Also, the finalists will be listed in the order that we learn of them. No one but RWA knows how these writers ranked in the first round of judging.)

Well, RWA said on FB that all would be posted after 2 (CT). If that helps any hehe.
Maybe they’re torturing you by making you wait until last since you’re doing this blog today? Boy, that would be cruel.
No, I think we can all safely say we’ve either finaled or not this year. They’ve listed the peeps they couldn’t contact, and I wasn’t one of them.
Damn.
HUGS!
Hugs from the north too.
Obviously you had at least one idiot judge.
Ginormous hugs, Jamie.
Big hugs, Jamie!
big hugs, Jamie.
A *HUGE* Congratulations to all the finalists!! And a major Kudos to those who entered!
Ria, BIG thanks from all the Rubies for all your help today!
ALLLLLLLL RIGHT!
Ladies, it’s been an amazing morning, but I know I feel like I’ve aged a good five years in five hours. What say we all push back from our keyboards and get some fresh air?
I’m so, so happy for each and every finalist this year! This is only the beginning of the excitement for this new class.
Everyone, join us back here on Monday as we welcome the new group. And on Tuesday, I think we’re holding a consolation party (with more prizes!) so meet us here, same time, same place.
Thanks for sticking with me. I love you guys!
You did an amazing job today. Thanks so much!
Absolutely heroic job, Jamie!!! I wish I could take you out for pizza and a beer right now!! You did the Rubies proud!
I gonna soak in the cajuzzi with a bottle of bubbly!
FINALISTS!!!! Don’t forget to join the 2011 GH Finalists yahoo group! Jamie put the link at the top of the blog. Come meet and greet your new GH sisters!
Hey there, Yahoo Groups won’t let me on, or else I am that clueless. Will invites be sent out to our emails?
In order to do that we would need your e-mail address.
Try this link Jen. It should work.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/2011GHFinalists
I think I just approved your membership, Jen.
Robin Lynn Perini is now a double finalist in GH Series Action/Suspense. Way to go!!
Thanks so much, Robin! I got the call right before leaving for work. Didn’t even know about the second one until my loving critique partners told me. LOL.
Love your name, btw
.
Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to RSS for the advice I read last year on entering. I’m pleased (although I guess the promise of confidentiality means I can’t say who?) that one of the entries I read an enjoyed as a judge finaled. I’ll definitely be back Tuesday, as I have a special thing I want to say then, again under the umbrella of confidentiality, to my fellow non-winners, since I read some excellent things that didn’t win–but today , again, congratulations to those who did win, including RSS member and my own chaptermate, who knows who she is.
I meant final, of course, congratulations to the finalists, but even finaling is so huge to me it’s hard to distinguish it from winning. You’ve won the first round anyway.
Congratulations to all the finalist. AND congratulations to those who entered this year! We can’t all be finalist, but we all have something very special, a book we created. That’s saying a lot.
I heard a huge group of Ruby Slippered Sisters finaled in the GH and RITA – Congratulations to all of you and to everyone who got the Call today!!!!
We have 11 GH finalists and 1 Rita finalist. We’re so very proud of our sisters.
Thanks so much for stopping by, Dianna1
We’re so incredibly proud of all our sisters!
Congrats to all of the finalists.
Congratulations to all the finalists!!
Di
Congratulations to all the finalists! What an achievement.
I second (or third or fourth) the congrats to all finalists. I’m excited to join you and glad to see some familiar names on the list.
Thanks, Rubies, for all your encouragement. I doubt I could have done it without you.
Arlene! I was so happy to see your name on the finalists’ list. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
And we’ll be here to keep supporting the new finalists!! Come right back Monday (I know you will, Arlene!!!) and we’ll celebrate all together!!
You can bet I’ll be around … when I’m not trying to work on that pesky synopsis/query letter, that is.
Congrats to all of the finalists and those that entered for submitting!! I bow down before the brave!!
And thank you, Rubies, for sharing the excitement with all of us!!
Wow, what a day! CONGRATULATIONS to all of the 2011 finalists!!!
And hugs all around to those who didn’t get the call. Your time will come.
Wow!!!! I am so thrilled to see LOTS of familiar names. Super congratulations to all my fellow Rubies and Unsinkables who finaled – you’re all stars!
Congrats to my fellow Aussies on the RITA list – Marion Lennox and Kelly Hunter. Whoo!
Jamie, thanks so much for doing such a brilliant job on the blog today!
Congrats everyone! Whoo hoo!
Congrats to all the finalists!!!!
And to those who didn’t final: I know there are SOOOO many wonderful books and wonderful unpublished manuscripts that didn’t get honored today (just to name two omissions from the Ritas that shocked me: no Courtney Milan?? no IRON DUKE???).
The Rita and the Golden Heart are beyond fabulous, but they’re only one measure of success. Chin up if you didn’t final, and KEEP WRITING!!!
I was shocked that Courtney Milan wasn’t in there, and also that Jeannie didn’t make it.
There are a lot of books on the list I haven’t yet read though, so I guess I have a lot of catching up to do in the next few months!
Yes…pout…was really hoping to see BUTTERFLY SWORDS up there. Wonderful book, amazing debut!
How true this is, Elisa, and an important thing to remember. So funny. I kept sneaking a peak at my phone all day and my mom kept fussing at me. Finally, I *tried* to explain about what this day meant, and then she started. “But why didn’t yours final. Yours is so good.” Yeah, try explaining that to your mom. Um…everyone’s books is pretty good, Mom. That’s why they got published.” LOL. Finally, I told her that I needed something to aspire to and that if I got everything handed to me right out of the gate that it would jeopardize my career because I’d get fat and lazy with my writing. Finally, after berating my unknown judges, she agreed.
Yes, we are all winners because we get up everyday and toss our hearts out for people to trample. That takes courage.
And let me say how exiting today was. I enjoyed squealing as each Ruby and Ruby friend was revealed. Thanks, Jamie, for hosting and Liz for making sure we didn’t crash! It was awesome!
Great attitude, Liz!!! I’m sure we’ll see you on the Rita list one of these days!!

thank you very much for blog and informations ,
I have looked at many sites on this subject and not come across a site such as yours which tells everyone everything that they need to know. I have bookmarked your site. Can anyone else suggest any other related topics that I can look for to find out further information?
please visit my store if you like geeky products . for exm. keyboard slippers
thanks Ces
certainly like your web-site but you have to check the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling issues and I find it very bothersome to inform the reality then again I will definitely come back again.
