IT’S HOT, HOT,HOT
![]() Posted by Rita Henuber Aug 16 2011, 12:01 am in Ruby Release Yes, it’s hot in the north, hot in the south, hot on the right and left coasts. But nowhere is it nearly as hot as our very own Darynda Jones. Her grim reaper series has sold to twelve foreign counties, TV rights to CBS, and the first in her YA trilogy will debut April 2012. Today Darynda’s, Charley Davidson, is back better than ever, in Second Grave from the Left. So are Cookie, and Reyes. And… talk about hot! That man, eh..son of Satan is H-O-T! And don’t you love Second Grave’s cover? Recently I caught up with Darynda and asked her a few questions that my inquiring mind wanted answered. Thank you so much, Rita! And to everyone for coming. Q/ Darynda, how long did it take you to become an overnight success? LOL, while I’ve been writing forever and a day, it took me seven years of serious writing before I sold. Q/ I think our VOICE comes from life experiences. We write from the perspective of these experiences. In the last two years your life has changed. Do you think your voice has changed? It’s funny because I have learned that your voice can change with each project. The more you write, the better you get and the more evolved your voice becomes. I used to think it was something concrete and that once you found it, it never changed. That’s just the way you sound no matter what you write. While my writing definitely has quirks, it does change a bit with each project and I have to be careful when I’m in deep writer mode not to read something too far off of how I want to sound. I will pick up other author’s voice without even noticing. Then I go back and read what I wrote a few days later and scratch my head. Q/ Has Charlie grown and changed because of it? Any other characters? I think I’m getting a stronger grasp on Charley. She has grown in that her voice is more natural sounding now than it was when I first wrote her. The same with the other characters. Q/ Darynda and Charley tell me what you would do in these situations and answer the questions. In a box you discover a library book 5 years overdue. DARYNDA: I would definitely take it back (while wearing the cone of shame) and pay restitution for my wrongdoing. CHARLEY: I would totally reread it. Clearly it was a good book. You go to the fridge to get milk and the container is empty. DARYNDA: I would shake my fist at the closest culprit (probably my husband) and run to a convenience store for more. CHARLEY: I would sneak next door and steal some from Cookie. It’s okay, I have a key. Your neighbor allows his dog to poop on your front sidewalk and said neighbor never cleans it up. DARYNDA: I would probably scoop it up and put it on his sidewalk. CHARLEY: I would probably scoop it up and put it on the hood of his car. If you watch TV what’s the best show ever? DARYNDA: Anything by Joss Wheddon. CHARLEY: The Walking Dead Second language you would learn. DARYNDA: Well, my second language is ASL, but I would love to learn French as well. CHARLEY: I know them all already, though Klingon was quite the challenge. Dream vacation. DARYNDA: Anywhere with a beach. CHARLEY: Anywhere with half naked guys on a beach. Deepest fear. DARYNDA: Losing someone close to me. CHARLEY: Losing someone close to me only to have them stick around for a decade to give me dating advice. And wedgies. Shoe of choice-sandal, five inch hooker heels, Oakley boots. DARYNDA: Oakley boots, hands down. CHARLEY: All of the above. There are just times when five-inch hooker heels come in handy. Prefer to drive a Suburban or Prius? DARYNDA: Definitely a Prius. CHARLEY: Suburban, baby. Size matters. Day or night person? DARYNDA: I do better in the daylight hours, though I do work some pretty late nights. CHARLEY: Night. I look good in black. Darynda is the 2009 Golden Heart® Winner in the Paranormal Category. She lives in the Land of Enchantment, also known as New Mexico, with her husband of more than 25 years and two beautiful sons, the Mighty, Mighty Jones Boys. Book one in the Charley Davidson series, FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT, was a hardcover release in February 2011 with book two, SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT, coming out TODAY and book three, THIRD GRAVE DEAD AHEAD, in February 2012. Fantastic questions and fantastic answers! I loved Charley’s comment about already knowing all languages–it’s so Charley.
Congrats on the release of Second Grave from the Left, Darynda! I know I’m gonna love it.
Thank you so much, Vanessa!!! Isn’t Charley a hoot? She’s so fun to write.
I can’t wait to read SG. I love Charley’s answers. Isn’t it great how our characters always know the perfect thing to say in any situation? Too bad we don’t get a full minute to think of and revise our witty responses in a real life.
Oh no kidding, Laurie! I’m just not that funny, but Charley can get away with anything. LOL!
Congrats on the release of SG. I can’t wait to read it, because of Charley of course. Reyes has nothing to do with it. Cough Cough.
LOL. Great interview, ladies. I love your off-the-cuff, honest answers.
Question; What drink would you order while on that beach, watching or not watching future stud material for your stories?
Don’t know about Darynda and Charley but it depends on the time of day which drink I choose
Oooo, that’s a good point.
I would choose a margarita. Charley would pick anything with one of those little umbrellas. She’s so easily entertained.
I’m with you. Prickly pear Margarita. I could one or two now. LOL.
Congrats D. Fun interview, ladies.
Thank you, Kelly!!!!
What a great interview, Rita, Darynda, and Charley! Congrats on the release of SECOND GRAVE–can’t wait to read it.
Thanks so much, Anne!!!!
Fun! Must go out and get today!
I agree with Charley on most her answers. I have plenty of hooker heels and I drive a suburban. If only I looked like that in black leather….
Congrats, sweet (and sassy) sister! So proud for you!
Vice versa with me, I think, Liz. I look okay in black leather – like Charley, in black, period – but my ankles just can’t deal with the hooker heels anymore.
Fun interview, ladies! And congratulations, D, on SECOND GRAVE!
Liz and Tamara you both look good in everthing.
They do look good in anything, huh, Rita? If only I were as tiny as you, Tammy. Sigh….. But I’m with ya on the heels. Though an amazing friend got me a pair of the heels that are on the UK cover, black with red skulls. OMG they are amazing. I’ll have to make an exception.
Thank you so much, Tam!!!
Thank you so much, Liz, and you look good in anything. Such a hot tamale, you are.
Looks like I’m on my way to B&N (probably via the net) to grab this. One of these days, I’ll be getting a signed copy. *sigh* Heaven knows, I keep trying.
Great interview. Congrats on the release! So excited!
Oh, I know, Gwyn!!!! Every time, I’m like, Pick Gwyn, pick Gwyn, pick Gwyn. Sigh… I’m doing a signed hc on goodreads, you know, if you want to try again. LOL.
Thank you SOOOOOOOO much!
~D~
No B&N trips for me. I pre-ordered it from Amazon a long, long time ago. And look here it is on my Kindle, just like magic.
I know what I’m doing at lunch time….
And, oh, I love the scull belt buckle. Can Charley tell me where to pick one of those up? I need it for my pirate costume.
LOL, Hope, I will ask my editor and thank you so much!!! Hope you enjoy!
Terrific Rita and Darynda & CHARLEY!!! I can’t wait for Second Grave on the Right. And somebody better get over here and clean up the water I spewed all over my keyboard over the dog poop on the hood of the car
))) Have a great second book send off, Darynda!
Oh! Sorry. I’m on my way
Hahaha!!! Sorry about that, Donnell! But thank you so much! ~D~
Congratulations, Darynda. What great timing. I’m going to Norway in a couple weeks and want to load up my kindle. And I can’t wait to read more about Charley. Enjoyed the interview!
OH yay! Thank you so much, Bev! Hope you enjoy and have fun on your trip. Wow!
Yay! Time to get my Charley fix! Can’t wait to read it, Darynda. I wanted to get the audiobook, but needed to get it on the Kindle so my mom can read it, too. Hmmm…nothing says I can’t have both, huh? Of course, then I’ll just end up sitting in the car in my garage listening to it for hours after work (because if I don’t take it out of my car then I’m only allowing myself to listen/read during my drive to work and back *snort*), instead of sitting up late one night to read until dawn.
Not sure I can make it to Labor Day weekend without starting it, but if so, I see a long night ahead of me
Can’t wait!
Congrats on all your success, and terrific interview, Rita!
OMG, I do that SAME thing, Kim!!!! I will sit out in the carport listening… just a few more minute…. right after this scene I’ll go in… no really. Hahaha!
Thank you so much! <3
~D~
YAY, Darynda (and Charley)! Congrat on the release.
And can I just say how much I’d love an outfit like that on the cover? It’s wicked cool. Where can I get one? (Oh, and a body like that, too, please.) LOL
Um, that should be “CONGRATS!!!”
Hahaha! I need to find that belt buckle, if nothing else, but I do love the jacket. And that’s me on the cover. They begged. What could I say? *snerk*
Okay, it’s not me.
Thanks so much!!!
~D~
Darynda, Congrats on Second Grave. I read the excerpt in my newsletter today–and man, I’m ready to read the rest.
(I’m totally Prius too!)
Beth
LOL thank you, Beth!!! They wanted something that wasn’t out there for the general public, so I went with something a little hot.
I love that scene. lol
Darynda;
Happy Book Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And what a fun interview – I’ve been so looking forward to this book!
Addison
Thank you so much, Addison!!! <3
Yay! So excited that release day is here!
I loved the interview. One of the fun things about writing is how our characters can pull off stuff like stilettos and leather. I’m already 5’10″ so I stay away from heels for the most part. LOL.
I didn’t know you were that tall! That’s cool! I’m 5’7″ and I feel like a giant in heels. LOL. Wasn’t the interview great? Rita came up with all the questions. Miss smarty pants. LOL!
Thanks for stopping by!
~D~
I squealed when I got my message from Amazon that it had been downloaded to my Kindle this morning — I’d ordered it months and months ago (I think I ordered it seconds after I finished the first book!!)
Can’t wait to start reading it.
And what a fun interview you two — great post today!
Thank you, Eileen, and yay! Hope you enjoy it!!! You’ll have to let me know what you think. ~D~
[...] Today I’m interviewing Darynda Jones, bestselling author, about the release of book Second Grave on the Left at the Ruby Sisters blog, http://www.rubyslipperedsisterhood.com/its-hot-hothot/ [...]
Hilarious interview, ladies!!!
I’m so excited Second Grave is finally here!!! I’m off to download it to my Kindle right now….just what I needed to celebrate the last hurrah of summer!!
Thank you, Elisa, and can you believe how fast the summer flew by? I’m floored kids are already going back to school.
Hope you enjoy!
~D~
Darynda,
Happiness to You. The cover is fantasmic, love it, love it, love it. I’m still in awe of whatever dark corner of your mind came up with Charley Davidson. Can’t wait to read SG. Extra bonus joy for the sale of the tv rights. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the rights turn into a pilot that sells and that the resulting show runs until it hits that magic number—one hundred episodes! It’d be a lot of fun!
Great interview, Rita…looking forward to your release as well. Kelley
Thanks Kelley.
I would love to see Charley a cult classic.
Oh, yea!
LOL, thank you, Kelley!!! I would love for them to pick up the show, just to see how they envision in, what they come up with and who they get to play Charley. What fun!
Yes, the casting would be tremendously cool. I’m with Rita, I think we’re talking cult status
Whatever it brings…have fun with it. KB
Woohoo! Can’t wait to read Second Grave! Love the interview.
Wow, great interview, ladies! Charley’s answers cracked me up (good job with those questions, Rita). I sooo can’t wait to read SC.
Oh yeah…what I really wanted to say was congrats on the release! Yay!
Oops…should be SG, lol.
LOL, thank you so much, Tina!!!! Weren’t Rita’s questions great? haha So fun!
Awesome interview, ladies! Love Charley. Her wit is totally fun. Congratulations on another amazing book! (love your face-toothy grin)
Love your face right back, Miss Shea!!!! <3
~D~
Dog poop on the car hood. I love Charley. Can’t wait to read Second Grave.
Thank you, Kate!!!! That would certainly get his attention.
~D~
Got my copy today. Already read the first chapter. Anyone jealous?
LOL!
LOL, thank you so much, Liz!!!
Oooh, I loved First Grave and have been anticipating the second installment. So glad it’s finally here! Congrats, Darynda!
Yay! Thank you, Vivi!!!! <3
~D~
Hilarious interview, Rita and Darynda. Now that’s voice!
I’m totally looking forward to reading Second Grave. First Grave was a riot, and oooh, Reyes…. YUM.
Thank you so very much, Cate!!!
xoxox ~D~
Sorry, Ruby Sisters, was out of town today. Cute interview! Good luck, Darynda!
Thank you!!!!! Hope it was a fun trip! ~D~
Darynda, you deserve the most awesome release ever–congratulations on book no. 2 and here’s looking forward to the continued adventures of Charley Davidson!!! (jenn scampers off to buy an official copy)
